After at least a year, we finally got around to installing the the bug screen (aka cat keeper) that came with the Anderson door. The trouble with waiting that long to install was we lost something. No, none of the parts were missing; it was the instruction booklet that was MIA. We moved the small boxes of stuff around number of the times in the past 12 or so months and by looking at the parts list above you will note there is no shortage of pieces.
On Tuesday night I went on to the Anderson site and poked around long enough to find the installation guide as a pdf. We downloaded, printed, and were ready to go. The thing with installing the door is (unlike most prefab assembly products) you actually have to drill new holes in the frame to attach various parts with supplied pop rivets. This makes sense if you think about it. If they drilled all of the possible holes for both left and right hung installations it would be riddled with perforation possibilities. From some reason piercing the white finish was a big commitment (seems at this point we would be over those fears).
For the most part it went off without a hitch. I do want to call attention to the highlighted part called "hinge placement template". This is a spacer that allows you to set the hinges in the door frame and have them match up with the ones you just fastened to the door. Trouble is they don't depict what this template looks like nor do the tell you how long it is so that you might be able to fashion one for yourself. That was the one missing part. We both looked and looked for it, finally we just aligned the door in the frame and used the other half of the hinge to gauge where they went.
After installation we found a small strip of yellow paper. THAT was the template. The folks at Anderson have exceptional products, however in this case the guide could use a little work.
