We keep a few frayed white shirts on hand, primarily as beach wear. On the tension rods I picked up this afternoon, they serve as temporary window treatments, anticipating the sheers that'll go in their place (soon).
I guess I need to face facts and start believing that Fall is upon us, which means my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving (or "gourmand day" if you will) is fast approaching. I'd really like to have this place a lot further along by then. The challenge is we have weekend commitments extending well into November.
The nice thing with the finishing work is it can be taken in small bites. Theory is if we each do one to two hours work every evening (prep to clean) we can slowly chip it all away. Tonight that meant priming trim boards.
And after numerous trips to the Depot, Lowe's AND neighborhood plumbing store, it looks like Michael just finished installing the third floor railing. Perhaps I can coax out a post (tomorrow).
It seems that everything led up to the big party last weekend. I was thinkning that we took it sort of easy this week untilI I relized we had actally done a lot of planning, including a substantial clarification of pending design & construction items as well as getting estimates for remaining electrical work on first floor.
The big snow storm this weekend gave us the opportunity to extend the contemplative sloth for another couple days.
After spending the better portion of today slow cooking dinner and baking treats I think we now have another solid plan that should get us through to the spring.
The new design changes have mainly to do with figuring out a few ways of exposing the old and reintegrating it to the new. More of that will follow in the next few days.
Happy Holloween to all. We've been in the house exactly one year!
Thanksgiving has been some sort of benchmark for us ever since closing on the house. Our initial renovation plan hinged on T'giving as a deadline. Would the house be warm enough to have dinner if the roof wasn't done, the insulation wasn't in place, etc? Well anyone who's been following this blog knows how little we had to worry about any of that! Instead we were able to focus on the simple holiday pleasures of last-minute grocery shopping, acquisition of roasting paraphenalia, whirlwind cleaning, and hours upon hours of food preparation.
Due to the crafty use of a huge sheet of plywood, we quickly doubled the size of our table, spread it with a new linen cloth, and mounted an incredible centerpiece. Dinner included two pork loins stuffed with sundry tasties, a honey glazed duck, mushrooms au gratin, and sweet potato souffle. Dessert lasted literally all night as various friends straggled in with sweet contributions.
Thanks to all who made the evening memorable: Rebecca, Kim, Dana, Ronda, Martin, Lori, Richard, Kate, Alex, Lisa, and John. The benchmarks we reach in the company of friends are the true records of our success.

quite a bit happened while we were away. I'm hoping Rashad our floor guy took some pictures of his process. if so, look for a floor finishing strip very soon.
