Remember the book The Orchid Thief? It's about a guy from South Florida obsessed with rare orchids and the antics that ensue. Beyond orchids the book also talks a lot about monomania.
In 19th century psychiatry, monomania (from Greek monos, one, and mania, mania) was a form of partial insanity conceived as single pathological preoccupation in an otherwise sound mind.
I wouldn't say that I am monomaniacal in any extreme, but I am willing to own a deep and overt yet ever changing fascination with things. This week/year it is the hyper-paraboloid.
I've had a Kelty tarp that is basically this shape that I've used as a beach shade for years. Shade is a poor descriptor; it’s like a beach kite. The versatility of the shape has served us well. We've used it as shade and a wind block to equal success.
Tomorrow I start a series of welding courses at 3rd Ward. I have a notion you will be seeing a lot of this orchid in the weeks to come
